Today ill be talking to a very good friend of mine, someone who I am very lucky to have in my life & who probably has more responsibility for this podcast happening than anyone other than myself. You see, Jan Hugel is something of an accidental mentor to me when it comes to low intervention wine. Wine in general even. Jan & I have known each other for quite a long time & he took an interest in my love of wine quite early on because (little did I know) he was on his way to becoming pretty much synonymous with natural wine in Berlin. Jan very often questioned why I liked what I did, what I liked about it, & whether or not he could get me to try & appreciate things that I was staunchly opposed to. & he never did this in a way that was any less than respectful of my opinions even when they were (I know realize) pretty damn stupid. Jan was priming the engine the whole time, getting me ready for that moment when I tried the wine (or wines) that would completely change the way I thought about them & introduce to me the whole vast new world that I now try very hard to bring to others. Someday, though we have very different things that we look for in wine & very different kinds of wine we would like to make ourselves, I hope to run/work a vineyard together with this guy.
